Wrong Approach by the Federal Government<\/p>\n

The aftermath of the <\/span><\/span>EndSARS<\/span><\/span> campaign was believed would make the government adopt a more realistic approach to solving the problems confronting this country which led the youths to go on peaceful protests in the month of October, 2020.<\/span><\/span> It is unfortunate that rather than developing trust in the youths that their complaints would be convincingly addressed as promised when the protests were on, the government has embarked on victimization and witch-hunting of the sponsors of the protests by seizing their passport<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span>, arresting and detaining them <\/span><\/span>sometimes with no or <\/span><\/span>on <\/span><\/span>spurious <\/span><\/span>charges and <\/span><\/span>freezing the accounts of the said sponsors.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Sad<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span> the government that is not trusted<\/span><\/span> by the people, which led to the elongation of the protests,<\/span><\/span> is behaving <\/span><\/span>in a <\/span><\/span>way<\/span><\/span> that<\/span><\/span> further<\/span><\/span> undermines <\/span><\/span>the p<\/span><\/span>eople<\/span><\/span>\u2019s trust <\/span><\/span>in Government<\/span><\/span>. There is <\/span><\/span>clearly <\/span><\/span>a betrayal of trust and breach of good faith in the negotiation with the <\/span><\/span>EndSARS<\/span><\/span> youths. <\/span><\/span>It is the promise to look into the complaints of the youths that made many people counsel an end to the protests. The recent approach of the government<\/span><\/span> is a reinforcement of the lack of trust the youths have about <\/span><\/span>the <\/span><\/span>government from the onset. It is regrettable that the <\/span><\/span>some magistrates and judges being used to deny citizens their fundamental rights of hearing and <\/span><\/span>sanctioning illegality <\/span><\/span>by denying bail for ordinarily bailable <\/span><\/span>allegations and freezing orders <\/span><\/span>of the C<\/span><\/span>entral<\/span><\/span>Bank of Nigeria (CBN) by <\/span><\/span>way of <\/span><\/span>ex <\/span><\/span>parte<\/span><\/span> application to freeze the accounts of the leaders of the protesters<\/span><\/span>for six whole months<\/span><\/span>!<\/span><\/span> It is certain that the CBN <\/span><\/span>lacks <\/span><\/span>the <\/span><\/span>locus to trigger such process in the <\/span><\/span>context of th<\/span><\/span>e<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span>e<\/span><\/span> events <\/span><\/span>first instance. The courts are being manipulated by those who feel threatened by the <\/span><\/span>awakening of the youths<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span> We expect the judiciary to appreciate the issues involved in the cases before them and be part of the social re-engineering of the Country, by treating cases in the pragmatic <\/span><\/span>manner..<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

We have seen all this <\/span><\/span>before<\/span><\/span> and w<\/span><\/span>e<\/span><\/span> know w<\/span><\/span>h<\/span><\/span>e<\/span><\/span>re<\/span><\/span> it will take us. A dictatorship is obviously being slowly but <\/span><\/span>obdurately<\/span><\/span> unwrapped.   <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

We condemn <\/span><\/span>the victimization efforts being <\/span><\/span>visited on the <\/span><\/span>EndSARS<\/span><\/span> protesters <\/span><\/span>in totality<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span> urge maturity on the part of the government<\/span><\/span> and stop th<\/span><\/span>e adoption of undemocratic and <\/span><\/span>in<\/span><\/span>human method in dealing with the aftermath of the <\/span><\/span>EndSARS<\/span><\/span> protests<\/span><\/span>. Protest is a constitutional and democratic right which cannot earn the kind of victimisation going on. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

We <\/span><\/span>therefore <\/span><\/span>urge the g<\/span><\/span>overnment<\/span><\/span> to<\/span><\/span> implement the five<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>for<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>five accepted demands of the youths and engage them genuinely. No amount of intimidation or harassment will work<\/span><\/span> as it will only exacerbate <\/span><\/span>tensions in <\/span><\/span>an otherwise fragile polity.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

We also urge the traditional rulers and progressive politicians to avoid them being used to sanction these acts by conflating the <\/span><\/span>EndSARS<\/span><\/span> protests with the criminal arson and looting that followed the protests. These rounds of regional meetings of traditional rulers and political leaders smack of manipulation to create a pseudo-national consensus on the <\/span><\/span>continuing and <\/span><\/span>planned <\/span><\/span>violation of rights of citizens. Fundamental human rights are universally cherished rights<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span> The country especially in its current economic straights should avoid becoming a pariah state as its youths are forced into exile <\/span><\/span>as in the NADECO days. <\/span><\/span>The news of the appearance of one of the activists of <\/span><\/span>EndSARS<\/span><\/span> in Canada is ominous. Our youths must not be made exiles just for speaking up. Neither must they come to harm in the country. We cannot turn our youths into Zombies. They are assets to us and they are the future we dream of and the hope of those who seek the lost glory we sought in our youth but dashed by the poor governance choices we made in the last 30 years. We must give them a voice <\/span><\/span>and a chance t<\/span><\/span>o<\/span><\/span>recapture what we lost.<\/span><\/span>  <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Our pauperized citizens need a country engaged in cooperation with the rest of the world and investments from investors, both domestic and international. The fear of instability drives away investment, local and foreign. Even without the recent problems Nigeria ranks higher than Ghana in the index of failing nations and is not surprisingly rewarded with higher Direct Foreign Investment. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
